Buying Teak

Many customers who are looking for long lasting patio furniture end up buying teak. Wood furniture is always rated most popular with design experts because of its versatility in being both modern and classic looking. Teak furniture looks good in every garden!

Quality teak furniture will last a number of years as it is very durable. It’s great for the Canadian climate because of its ability to to withstand the harsh elements – both hot and cold. In order to get the best teak furniture, there are a few things that you need to consider.

Wooden garden furniture made of out of teak is better than other wood because it contains natural chemicals and oils that provide protection from rot.

You can purchase both new and recycled teak. There is one very important thing to keep in mind: teak generally lasts as long as it took it to grow. Therefore, buying wood furniture that would have grown quickly might not be the best investment. On the other hand, teak that has been recycled is much more durable, since the trees it came from are significantly older.

When exposed to the elements, after about 6 months, teak will turn a beautiful grey colour. This change in colour does not effect the integrity of the furniture. If the rustic grey colour of teak does not appeal to you, you can always restore the original colour. This does take a lot of work and will need to be repeated every year, especially if the wood is in a very sunny area.

Beware of imposters! Not all “teak” is real. “Copper Teak” is actually eucalyptus wood and “Sand Teak” is really shorea wood. If you are looking to avoid buying a substandard product, you should trust your instincts. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.
